Trigger -
During one of our team members (Siddharth Uttam) pitching competition, he was required to analyse NEP and build a business model. Where he analysed that NEP is going to implement the scheme of children's taught vocational training and provide internships but as there is no current structure available to do so there is a vacuum in the market.
Later while doing the course of DE331 he realised that this problem can be solved if we get experienced Vocational experts on board and connect them with the students. Hence this became the trigger point for this Idea.
As DE 331 students, we had an opportunity to work on a project that can help elderly people around us. We 3 were highly excited as this course was giving us an opportunity to do something for society and moreover, we can do something for elderly people.
With this excitement we started looking for problems that the elderly might face, we came up with
Initial Need Statements-
Skin-conforming, non-irritant streamlined boots for salt pan workers
Former daily wage workers cannot earn money and take care of themselves; NEP would also make training in trades near-compulsory
Lack of exercise and dietary resources for the elderly
A draw-over app that provides an alternate UI for the elderly and corrects any setting changes done by mistake (using AI perhaps)
Loneliness, depression and feeling of abandonment for the elderly in old age homes / urban small families
Household furniture not posture-friendly for the elderly
Shaky hands and fingers, cannot hold cups, brushes etc
Lack of movement and consequent restriction in personal hygiene
Finding misplaced spectacles and belongings
We thought some common problems that were visible to common man were already having solutions in some or the other way,
So, we decided to move- out of our comfort zone and we're searching for problems that are not visible and are a big problem as per scale too. After our research, we finally concluded with these 3 problems
1 Mobilising elderly skilled workers to train budding workers
2 Lack of customised exercise and dietary resources for the elderly
3 A draw-over app that provides a more tailored UI for the elderly and auto-corrects any inadvertent setting changes using AI
After consulting with Professors Chakku and Anil K Gupta, we finalised the following problem as we also had an interest in exploring this unexplored area-
Mobilising elderly skilled workers to train budding workers (Approved)
The inability of daily wage workers to earn after a certain age. Across demographics, ( 7 out of 10 Indians expect their children to support them in their retirement )
The NEP states that “at least 50% of learners going through the school and higher education system “shall have exposure to vocational education. Lack of teachers and internship opportunity in the field of Vocational Education such as carpentering and plumbing
And started working on it!
